The Honesty of a Self Portrait

Sometimes a portrait captures more than just a face; it holds a mirror up to the way we see ourselves.
This drawing was done of me by my very talented father in law, and it made me think about how much of our life is about what we choose to show, and what we leave out.
Living with ADHD I often feel like the picture people see of me is only part of the story; there is the version that looks composed, focused, and clear. But then there is the reality: scattered thoughts, bursts of energy, and the feeling of drowning.
Honesty – with ourselves and with others – is a bit like this portrait; it doesn’t erase the shadows, it includes them. None of us are perfect, but perhaps real strength lies in being able to be authentic and honest - especially to ourselves.
