ADHD and Medication: Is It Right for You?

When someone receives a diagnosis of ADHD, medication is often one of the main things they consider. I have ADHD myself but chose not to take medication - it is a personal decision, and I think it is important to do what is best for you.

From speaking with my clients over the years, it is clear that everyone's experience with ADHD medication tends to be quite different. Some find it transformative for their focus and impulse control, whereas others struggle with side effects or simply dislike how it makes them feel. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to taking medication for ADHD, as we are all different and experience things in our own way.

How Can ADHD Medication Help?

ADHD medication can help with some of the symptoms associated with ADHD, and for some people the difference can be significant. Clients have described finding it easier to concentrate, stay focused, manage impulses, and get started on things that previously felt incredibly difficult.

However, medication doesn't automatically solve every difficulty associated with ADHD. Finding the right medication and dose can also take time, which is why it is something to discuss properly with a qualified healthcare professional.

Medication Doesn't Automatically Solve Every ADHD Difficulty

One thing I believe it is important to keep in mind is that taking medication doesn't automatically hand you the ability to handle all the challenges ADHD throws your way.

You might find your concentration improves massively, yet still look at a mountain of paperwork you've avoided for three months and have no idea where to begin. Your head might be clearer, but you're still left untangling years of ingrained habits, frustration and self-doubt.

This is something I have heard from my clients - someone may find that medication has helped them concentrate, but they are still struggling with organisation, procrastination, time management, or knowing how to put that improved focus to use.

How Can ADHD Coaching Work Alongside Medication?

This is precisely why I tend to view medication and coaching as working hand in hand rather than being opposing choices.

Medication can help with some of the symptoms of ADHD, while coaching gives you the space to figure out how your brain actually works, and build practical strategies for daily life that are designed specifically for you.

We might look at why you keep putting off certain tasks, why your carefully planned routine keeps falling apart, or why you can spend hours focusing on something you enjoy but struggle to start something that needs doing.

Finding What Works for You

I don't think there is a single approach to managing ADHD that works for everyone. Medication can be extremely helpful for some people, while coaching and other forms of support can also play an important role.

I made my own decision not to take medication, but that doesn't mean I would recommend that everyone else makes the same choice. My experience is my own, just as your experience of ADHD is your own.

If you are considering medication, have a conversation with a qualified healthcare professional who can talk you through the options and help you decide what might suit your situation.
