The Planned ADHD Review

You may have seen the announcement today on the BBC that the government is planning a review of mental health and neurodivergence diagnoses, including ADHD and autism.

Some may wonder if this review could make it harder for people to access the support they need after years of struggling without recognition. As some of you may remember, Wes Streeting's previous suggestions that ADHD is over diagnosed did not go down well with some clinicians, professionals who work with neurodivergent people (such as myself) or neurodivergent people themselves.

As I have said before on here, I do not believe ADHD is over diagnosed, in fact I believe it is under diagnosed - now more people understand the signs due to increased information and awareness, more adults, young people and families are finally seeking assessments. This is not over diagnosis, this is overdue recognition!

A diagnosis is not just a label - it is relief, validation, and a doorway to support and understanding.

If this review goes ahead, I want to see it lead to better support for neurodivergent people. I want waiting lists to shrink, trained professionals to become more available and access to assessments made fair and timely. I want people with ADHD to be respected for what they are — not dismissed or judged because of shifting political or public debate.

I welcome any effort to improve support and services. I believe in honest, evidence-based discussion that respects people’s experiences rather than undermining them, and I will continue to stand with those who have long called for understanding, compassion and a fair chance at diagnosis and support.
